With a 4-3 vote, the Stillwater school board has decided to expand Brookview Elementary School in Woodbury. After opening in 2017, the school is nearing its 450-student capacity as hundreds of single-family homes are likely to be built nearby within the next decade, according to Woodbury planning officials. The expansion will consist of adding eight classrooms, with an estimated cost of up to $5.5 million. The project will be funded through the district's lease levy.
As people grapple with divisive political discourse nationwide, a local chapter of the League of Women Voters wants to help. The Cottage Grove and Woodbury chapter of the League of Women Voters will host a presentation from Rep. JoAnn Ward, D-Woodbury, on Saturday, Dec. 1. Ward, an outgoing third-term legislator who has a background in restorative justice and volunteers with the non-partisan National Institute for Civil Discourse, will give tips for headache-free political conversations. The talk begins at 10:30 a.m. in the second-floor conference room of Jerry’s Foods in Woodbury.
After nearly a year of cancer treatment, a South St. Paul second-grader has received a St. Bernard puppy from Make-A-Wish Minnesota. The surprise was featured during a segment of ABC's "Good Morning America" earlier this month, which captured Kaelee Dufrane lighting up as she met her new friend. She named the pet Missy after the character in the Disney film "Beethoven" — her all-time favorite movie, she told the network. Dufrane went through 14 rounds of chemo and 30 rounds of radiation to treat her osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office is set to continue providing law enforcement to cities including Afton. Afton, which has contracted with the Sheriff's Office for service since 1999, and the cities of Lakeland, Lake St. Croix Beach, St. Mary's Point and Lakeland Shores have received approval from the Washington County Board of Commissioners for contract renewals with the Sheriff's Office. The agreement will go for another two years, and will automatically renew each year afterwards for up to five years.
Made-to-order doughnuts are coming to Woodbury. The Pennsylvania-based chain Duck Donuts prides itself on allowing patrons to customize their pastries and watch as they're made from scratch. The chain expects to open its first Minnesota location at 7455 Currell Blvd., in December, according to a press release.
Reported hate crimes spiked by 17 percent nationwide and 23 percent in Minnesota, according to a new FBI report released Tuesday, Nov. 13. Last year, 7,175 crimes were reported nationwide, up from 6,121 in 2016. In Minnesota, 42 law enforcement agencies reported 146 bias-related crimes, up from 119 in 2016. The prior two years saw a decrease. A separate report from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension shows there were 48 anti-black, 21 anti-white, 21 anti-LGBT, 16 anti-Jewish and 10 anti-Muslim incidents.
Stan Karwoski and Wayne Johnson have won the two Washington County district commissioner races.
Tom Ingemann and Laurie Elliott have won the Newport City Council election. The two will fill the at-large representative positions left by Tracy Rahm and Roz Johnson, who decided not to run for re-election. Out of the five candidates running, Elliott earned 27 percent of the vote, while Ingemann won about 21 percent. Ingemann served 15 years until he lost in the 2016 election, and Schottmuller served from 1998 through 2010, choosing not to run for re-election.
Mirroring a nationwide trend of U.S. House seats flipping from Republicans to Democrats, Angie Craig ousted Rep. Jason Lewis in Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional district with a 5 percent margin. The victory marks the first time in 18 years that a Democrat has been elected to represent the district. It also signifies a key victory for Democrats across the country, who have been campaigning to flip at least 23 U.S. House seats to regain party majority.
A record amount of outside spending has flowed into U.S. House races in Minnesota, including the 2nd Congressional District.
