COTTAGE GROVE — City Council threw its support behind the annual Standing Strong 5K at its May 1 meeting.

The race, which runs May 18 at Hamlet Park, raises money for anti-bullying programs at Oltman and Cottage Grove middle schools.

Mayor Myron Bailey proclaimed that date as anti-bullying day in Cottage Grove.

This year's race will be followed by a community pledge and post-race concert by Families Against Bullying. The advocacy group was founded after the suicide of a Cottage Grove teen in November.

The FAB event is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. and will include music by the Park High School choir and Cottage Grove country singer Hailey James.

Representatives who attended the meeting include Cassandra Hallen, Joeline Wright, Pam Steed and Teri Langness.

  • Council member Steve Dennis proclaimed May 12-18 as National Police Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
  • Reported a favorable performance review of City Administrator Jennifer Levitt in an April 17 closed session.

"As a council, we're very pleased with her performance," council member LaRae Mills said.

Bailey said that Levitt herself requested the quarterly evaluations even though her contract specified an annual review.

"She wants to make sure that we're all on the same page," he said. Council approved the annual city administrator salary of $145,745, retroactive to Jan. 1.
