Thunderbolts finish regular season a perfect 9-0

The South Washington County Thunderbolts wrapped up the regular season with another easy win Monday, Oct. 30, as they prepare for the playoffs.

The Thunderbolts dispatched visiting St. Paul Johnson 15-2 to finish a perfect 9-0 in the adapted soccer CI South Division. South Washington County will get a first-round bye then play the winner of first-round game for the right to return to the state tournament. The Thunderbolts will host a section finals game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at East Ridge.

As usual, the Thunderbolts had both strong attacking offense and solid defense. South Washington County outscored its competition during the regular season by an average score of 12.8 to 1.4.

The state tournament will again be held in Stillwater High School Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17-18.

The Thunderbolts are a perennial participant in the state tournament, with state championships in 1997, 1998 and 2014. Last season South Washington County finished fourth.

"We would like to get back," said Thunderbolts head coach John Culbertson. "But it's one-and-done so there's no guarantee. But I like the way that the kids came out today. Everyone got to play again. We're seeing a lot of contributions from underclassmen."
