Community Education sponsors Marketplace of Learning

Last fall, the 25-year-old District 833 Community Education program Gentle Saturday was rechristened the Marketplace of Learning.

But there's more to it than just a new name.

Organizers are constantly trying to improve the twice-yearly event, Community Education staff member Josh Chilton said.

"We've revamped it and made it something that brings like-minded people together," said Chilton. "It's really a rebranding and the introduction of a new feature that brings new value."

The spring event begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Cottage Grove Middle School. The last class of the day starts at 2:40 p.m.

Children and adults can choose from a day's worth of classes, taught by 28 instructors, that include art, cooking, dancing and yoga for all ages. The cost for each class ranges from $10 to $40.

A combined full-day class that includes CPR, AED and first aid training for adults, children and infants costs $99.

The morning and afternoon classes will be split by a new lunchtime event called the Market Medley. Running from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., it will feature native dishes prepared by students in the Great Rivers Adult Education Consortium.

"Some of our Great River students who are learning English as a second language will showcase some foods and goods from their culture," Chilton said.

Classes include a wedding dance workshop, painting, SMART retirement tax awareness, first aid, cooking crepes and origami.
