Cottage Grove Police are seeking a man who allegedly made verbal threats while brandishing a shotgun at a residence in Cottage Grove.

The incident began in the early morning hours of March 12 when police responded to a call regarding a domestic situation at 8287 Jody Lane South. The residents were able to leave the home while officers were on the scene.

Following the original 4:23 a.m. call, police obtained a search warrant and called for assistance from the Washington County SWAT team. Negotiators made several attempts to contact the suspect, who would not answer his phone, according to Capt. Greg Rinzel, Deputy Director of Public Safety. The SWAT team entered the residence to find the suspect had left by the time police first arrived.

Residents in the immediate area were notified via Code Red that police activity was occurring in the area and to shelter in place.  A second Code Red message was later sent that the shelter in place had been lifted, and that the police department was clearing the area.

The Cottage Grove Police Department is investigating. The suspect is known to the residents according to police. Investigative reports will be forwarded to the Washington County Attorney’s Office for review of appropriate criminal charges.
