Tipoff in Cottage Grove drug case: Man struggled to eat doughnut

A man busted by Cottage Grove police last year for cocaine and prescription drug possession must spend five years on probation.

Steven Dean Buerman, 24, of Ramsey, was sentenced Feb. 3 in Washington County District Court after he pleaded guilty to fifth-degree controlled substance possession. His sentence includes five years of probation; eight days of jail time, which he had already served; and other conditions.

The case stemmed from a March 3, 2016, traffic stop in Cottage Grove. Police were told a man was seen snorting a drug while parked at a gas station. The vehicle, driven by a woman, was later stopped on Highway 61. Buerman was a passenger, and the officer reported that he appeared to be under the influence because he was talking extremely slowly, had his eyes half closed and “was having trouble getting a doughnut into his mouth,” the complaint states.

Police found two Xanax pills in Buerman’s pocket and a spoon that tested positive for the presence of cocaine.
