Slippery snowfall creates dangerous commute, Highway 61 traffic crashes pile up
A slick Highway 61 caused at least two dozen crashes during the all-day snowfall Dec. 28.
Most crashes caused only minor injuries and minor damage, but backed up traffic on the busy highway.
At one point Thursday morning Sgt. Bill Harrell, Washington County Sheriff's Office commander for the Newport area, said there were around a dozen cars crashed along Highway 61 between 70th Street and Glen Road.
The Minnesota State Patrol handled most of the crashes along the highway. Cottage Grove police said they responded to 16 calls on 61. They responded to 22 total crash calls throughout the day, four of which were injury crashes.
