Afton Apple's apple, raspberry season opens Saturday

Over a dozen varieties of apples and hundreds of raspberry bushes will be picked this fall season at Afton Apple Orchard. Paula Reds start off the season, which opens Saturday. (Bulletin photo by Emily Buss)A fall tradition in south Washington County is just days away as Afton Apple Orchard readies for a busy apple and raspberry season.
The nearly 200-acre orchard will open at 10 a.m. Saturday, and will be open for the fall season from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
To start, tangy Paula Red apples and fresh raspberries are ripe for the picking. Owner Cindy Femling said on the orchard’s voicemail that because the raspberry season is just beginning, picking will be light.
Further into fall, visitors to Afton Apple Orchard can pick over a dozen apple varieties, including the popular Sweet 16, McIntosh, Zestar and Honeycrisp. And at the end of September, pumpkins will be available.
