Former Newport Elementary students invited to dine

Former Newport Elementary School students are invited to dine at the North Pole Restaurant between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 21 and 22.

This is the last year for the tradition, since 1994, for sixth-graders to work in the restaurant and get the experience of what it's like to have a job in the food service industry.

Mary North, restaurant owner, also comes to sixth-grade classrooms to talk about job responsibilities and how to serve customers.

Sixth-graders will move on to middle school next year, so the program is ending.

Teachers feel that fifth-graders are not quite ready for the restaurant experience, according to Maureen Anderson, sixth-grade teacher.

"We want to go out in style," North said, adding that she hopes students who had the restaurant experience return.

Students' families and friends are also invited to dine with a portion of the profits going to the school.
