Two men charged with sexual assaults against sleeping women
A West Lakeland Township man faces burglary and sexual assault charges after he allegedly entered a home and made sexual advances on a sleeping woman. A Hugo man faces a similar, but unrelated, assault charge from the same night.
Zachary Paul Navarro, 26, said he doesn't remember entering the home on Overlook Avenue North in West Lakeland Township in the early morning hours of Sept. 27, but that he awoke on a floor. When he saw a young woman sleeping on a couch near him, he told Washington County deputies, he thought she might be "Rachel," a woman who he said he met at Woody's Bar in Bayport, the previous night.
The 28-year-old woman, who was staying at the residence with her boyfriend, sisters and mother, told deputies was awakened by someone she thought was her boyfriend trying to pick her up and take her to bed. Soon, however, she claimed a stranger with "clammy hands" was licking her face, fondling her chest, and, according to a criminal complaint, trying to put his tongue in her mouth.
When she pushed the man away, the woman said, she saw a white male in his 20s, of medium height, lacking facial hair, and wearing a long, blond ponytail. When she screamed, she said, he blurted something to the effect of "I don't know where I am; where do you live?" before running off into the darkness.
A short time later, the county sheriff's office picked up Navarro, who matched the description and was walking north along Osgood Avenue. He claimed he was headed to a gas station to buy cigarettes. The arresting deputy noted that Navarro smelled of alcohol.
Under further questioning at Washington County Jail, authorities said he admitted to waking up in a residence in which he had never been and that he soon left. Further, he said it was possible that he kissed a woman in the home, but that he didn't touch her sexually.
On Sept. 29, Washington County prosecutors charged Navarro with felony first-degree burglary and fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct. If convicted of all charges, he faces maximum penalties of 21 years in jail and $38,000 in fines.
Other than a trio of minor traffic convictions, Navarro lacks a criminal record.
Another sleeping assault
Another Washington County man faces a sexual assault charge for events on Sept. 27, although this time, the victim knew the suspect.
County prosecutors charged Nathan Ryan Parsell, 23, of Hugo, with felony third degree criminal sexual conduct after he allegedly penetrated a woman while she was sleeping a residence on Golfview Avenue in Oakdale.
An Oakdale police officer met with the 22-year-old woman, who was described in as in tears and nearly hyperventilating, at a nearby gas station after police were contacted around 6:30 p.m.
The woman said she had fallen asleep at the residence after drinking with friends the previous night. She awoke, according to the criminal complaint, naked from the waist down and aware of "someone else's fingers inside her vagina."
She realized the person was not her boyfriend, and after turning on a light, she recognized him as Parsell, a friend of her ex-boyfriend.
If convicted, Parsell faces maximum penalties of 15 years in prison and $30,000 in fines. He has two traffic convictions and a Department of Natural Resources violation on his record.
