Woodbury ranked best city in Minnesota for families; Cottage Grove is #11
WalletHub has ranked Woodbury the best place to live in Minnesota for families in 2018.
To determine the rankings, which were released on July 5, the personal finance website assigned ranks to four main categories — family life and fun, education, health and safety, affordability and socioeconomics — to compare 98 Minnesota cities. The highest-ranked cities were clustered around the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.
Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens has lived in the top-ranked city with her family for 33 years, and she said she takes pride in Woodbury’s emphasis on safety, school choice and community organizations. Most of all, Stephens praised the city’s parks and trails system, which boasts nearly 3,400 acres of park land and 150 miles of paved trails.
And then there’s the HealthEast Sports Center, the recreational facility Stephens called the “crown jewel” of Woodbury.
The ranking in each category was decided based on 21 criteria such as playgrounds per capita, quality of school system and general affordability. These were then weighted based on what the researchers considered most important for families. Cities were assigned a rank out of 100 in each of the four categories, from which the total score was determined.
The data WalletHub used comes from several statistics-gathering agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
