Forum Communications head elected to news industry advocacy board
BISMARCK — Forum Communications Co. President and CEO Bill Marcil Jr. was elected to the board of the News Media Alliance, an industry advocacy group, the organization said Wednesday, May 1.
Marcil, who is also publisher of the company's flagship newspaper, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, was elected to a one-year term that began Wednesday. Mark Aldam, the executive vice president and chief operating officer at Hearst, was named its board chairman.
The Virginia-based News Media Alliance was founded in 1992 through a merger of seven newspaper industry associations and was originally known as the Newspaper Association of America, according to its website.
Marcil's father, Bill Marcil Sr., was once the chairman of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, a predecessor organization.
The younger Marcil said he was honored to be on the national board at a "pivotal time" for the industry.
"Sitting at the same table as the largest companies in media is a tremendous learning experience for a kid from Fargo," he wrote in an email.
The News Media Alliance represents more than 2,000 news organizations, including print, digital and mobile publishers, according to a news release.
