The Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce took over the Historic John P. Furber Farm in Old Cottage Grove for its fall banquet Sept. 28. The Chamber also named its annual award winners. They include:
A recent attendance boundary vote not only split District 833 School Board members but also divided more than a dozen candidates for the school board in this fall's election. The board's decision last month to establish new boundaries for its four middle schools proved the one topic that most differentiated candidates in a recent election forum. Fanned across the boardroom dais and a second table, 14 candidates fielded questions about their strengths and priorities, district finances and the fall referendum in a Sept. 26 League of Women Voters forum.

I want to talk about public education because I support public education. This came when I was in a bad school district growing up that pushed me from school to school. My mom tried to get me into the private school my sisters attended, but the school refused as apparently I did not fit their "one-child-fits-all" philosophy. The savior was open-enrollment into a nearby school district, which I am thankful for every day.
The annual meeting of the Cottage Grove Cemetery Association will be held Wednesday, Sept. 20. For time and location, call 651-592-6290.
