Four East Ridge wrestlers placed in the 16-team Orono Invitational Saturday, Jan. 28. Marco Cavallaro and Hunter Lyden took second and third in their respective weight divisions. Cavallaro, at 220 pounds and with a 20-8 record on the season, lost to eventual first-place winner Casey Schilz of Elk River, whose record is 22-3. Lyden took third place at 106 pounds by defeating Trayton Hewitt of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial. Payton Thao (132) and Collin Brown (138) wrestled back to win consolation championships.
The young Wolfpack managed wins at just two weight classes Thursday, Jan. 26, as the team fell to Stillwater 63-9. Park junior Andrew Drigans pinned Stillwater's Jackson Dunleap at 170 pounds. Peter Oyebanji, also a junior, earned a 6-2 decision over Porter Estenson at 132 pounds for Park's other win. Park's Andres Sandoval (106), Jake Schwartz (120), Andrew Diaz (138), Steven Rose (145), Edric Waindim (152), Garrett Whitehead (160), Noah Johnson (182), Ryan Volkert (220) and senior Robert Marrier (285) suffered losses.
Six first-period goals propelled Woodbury past Park in a lopsided 8-2 win Thursday, Jan. 26. Max Meyer and Lucas Erickson each scored two goals for the Royals at the Bielenberg Sports Center. "We talked about establishing ourselves early as a team that needs to set the pace of the game rather than letting the other team dictate the pace," Royals head coach Wes Bolin said. "Our first periods have not been very strong this year, and we wanted to reverse that trend."
A first-place finish and seven total place-earners helped the Wolfpack take second in the nine-team Tartan Invitational. Closing out a three-meet week, Park finished the Saturday, Jan. 28, invitational with 398.5 points, well behind invite winner Woodbury at 461.5 points. North St. Paul took third at 332.5. Park senior Mack Christianson had a solid meet, claiming first place in the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 1.27 seconds. He also swam to a third-place finish in the 200 free, posting a 1:54.65.
Any uncertainty about whether South Washington County Schools will put a referendum to voters in November 2017 was laid to rest early.
School District 833 Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion families who long have been eager for their own space with plenty of breathing room for the popular program now are worried what their children might inhale at their next school. Air pollution and traffic volumes are among safety concerns Nuevas Fronteras parents have about a plan by BNSF Railway to build a 6,000-vehicle parking lot in St. Paul Park. The site is south of the Oltman Middle School building that District 833 intends to renovate for Nuevas Fronteras and other uses.
ST. PAUL — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton collapsed during his State of the State speech Monday night, Jan. 23, getting up and walking away a few minutes later. It was not immediately clear what happened to him. When he got up, he waved and walked to a back room. A southern Minnesota man was sentenced to four years in prison last month after he pleaded guilty to a May 2016 drive-by shooting in Newport.
Police continue searching for a suspect in an attempted armed robbery at Walgreen’s in Cottage Grove last week. A Caucasian female wearing sunglasses, a black hat and black hooded jacket entered the store about 2:40 a.m. Jan. 14, approached the pharmacy counter, pointed a handgun at the pharmacist and demanded narcotics, according to police.
South Washington County Schools is investigating after a student gained access to electronic personnel data. The district notified all of its roughly 3,250 employees last week that it discovered the data breach and was investigating with the help of law enforcement and a computer forensic firm. While it does not appear files were compromised beyond the student’s unauthorized access, the notice was sent to all employees “out of an abundance of caution,” communications director Barb Brown said.
