The majority of new housing starts taking place last year came from Woodbury, but Cottage Grove and other Washington County communities saw some positive housing numbers during the year as well. The Washington County Assessor Division released the annual assessment report last week, where market trends from October 2011 through September 2012 were analyzed. Although not quite back to the housing boom of 2008, traditional sales saw more activity compared to foreclosures that were the focus at the height of the recession. In Woodbury, foreclosure and short sale transactions declined from 373
It's a big misconception that county child protection services take young victims of neglect and abuse out of their homes. "We cannot place children involuntarily, only police and a judge can do that," said Rick Backman, division manager of Washington County Children Services.
Woodbury High School's principal is taking District 833 to court after dealing with a situation internally didn't yield her any results. Linda Plante, who's been the principal at WHS for 18 years, is concerned over pay disparities she discovered when former Park High School Principal Craig Paul was hired in 2011, according to court documents filed in Washington County District Court in February. All principals in the district are hired under a contract that lists a pay schedule with set amounts for senior high principals that advance depending on their tenure. Plante alleges Paul received a
Plans for a shopping center at a new southern development in Woodbury are expected to become reality this August. United Properties, along with project partner Jerry's Enterprises, Inc., announced Thursday, Feb. 7, that it will develop Bielenberg Gardens, a grocery-anchored shopping center located at the southwest corner of Radio Drive and Bailey Road. Bielenberg Gardens will feature 90,000 square feet of retail space on a 30-acre site. The shopping center will be anchored by a 68,000-square-foot grocery store, operated by Jerry's.
The 25-year-old man who allegedly held 11 people hostage at gunpoint in a Red Roof Inn motel room Friday made his first court appearance Tuesday where bail was set at $1 million. Demetrius Santreell Ballinger, of Stillwater, was charged with 27 felony counts including second-degree attempted murder for allegedly shooting one of the hostages inside the room. Woodbury police officers opened fire on the man, identified as Mark E. Henderson - who was unarmed - after he burst from the motel room toward them, authorities said last week.
One construction worker was hurt Monday when part of the roof at the new Liberty Ridge Elementary School site collapsed. Woodbury police were called to the accident around 3 p.m., but the injured worker was already pulled out from underneath the structure by the time they arrived, officer Tony Ofstead said. Mike Vogel, District 833 assistant to the superintendent for operations, said the man sustained non-life threatening injuries. The worker was transported to Regions Hospital in St.
A discount grocery store will soon be moving into a large vacant spot on Tamarack Road. Aldi is slated for a September opening in the former Borders location that closed last year after the company filed for bankruptcy. Matt Lilla, vice president of the Aldi Fairbault, Minn., division, said there is a growing demand for Aldi products in Woodbury. "Aldi chose the location for the new Woodbury store based on population density, proximity to competition, cost of the property and traffic patterns," he wrote in an email.
Mara Mayberry says she gets goose bumps when she talks about Relay for Life. "As more and more people have experienced Relay, they have seen the impact that it can have on the community coming together for a common cause," she said. "Cancer is still impacting so many people ... this provides the opportunity for them to do something about it." Relay For Life of South Washington County is the biggest one in the state, according to organizers.
A 65-year-old man was struck by an SUV Wednesday morning at the parking lot of the Norma Lane SuperAmerica in Woodbury. Police identified the man as Kenneth Burke of Little Canada. Emergency personnel extricated Burke from underneath the vehicle and transported him to Regions Hospital where he's listed in critical condition. Police said the driver was 47-year-old Michael Carroll of Woodbury.
Plans to reconstruct Woodbury Drive in south Woodbury drew criticism at an open house last Thursday. Also known as County Road 19, the highway will have a roundabout intersecting with Bailey Road as part of a construction project Washington County is undertaking in 2013. The city of Woodbury has partnered with the county on the plans that were presented at the Eagle Valley Golf Course last week. Called a "hybrid" roundabout, the multi-lane structure allows for smooth traffic flow, according to county engineers. It will have two lanes going east and west on Bailey Road and four going north
