ZUMBROTA -- The future of agriculture in Goodhue County was debated at length Thursday as County Planner Nancy Spooner-Mueller convened the first meeting on updating the county's comprehensive plan. "We are looking for what we want the county to be in 30 years," she told a packed room at Zumbrota City Hall. The comprehensive plan was created in 1969 and updated in 1990. Many comments focused on agriculture.

CANNON FALLS -- Goodhue County commissioners set 2003 goals at their annual workshop Wednesday. The budget was the No. 1 issue at the session led by leadership consultant Steve Johnson of Red Wing, and commissioners know they may face some tough decisions, especially if state aid is drastically reduced to county governments.

Wayne Edward Kalwat, 71, Red Wing, died Tuesday at his home. He was born Oct. 29, 1931, in Menno, S.D., to George and Gladys (Malone) Kalwat. He graduated from high school in Sheperdsville, Ky. He served in the U.S. Air Force from Oct. 6, 1949, to April 6, 1959. He married Joy Smith March 7, 1953, in Margate, England. He worked at Ford Motor Co. in St. Paul and Lorain, Ohio. In 1984, he retired and they moved to Hackensack, Minn. They have lived in Red Wing for the past six years. They operated the Doll Shop from the Northwoods in downtown Red Wing.

Esther Katherine Carlson Blakely, 89, Cannon Falls, died Tuesday at Cannon Falls Community Hospital. She was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Decorah, Iowa, to Martin and Jorine (Ramsey) Woldum. She graduated in 1931 from Decorah High School. On Nov. 18, 1933, she married Carl "Pete" Carlson of Cannon Falls. She married Everette "Curly" Blakely on Nov. 1, 1974. She was a longtime member of First English Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls.
