Newport resident Madeline “Mimi” Wiencke , 24, is the top ranked women’s alpine snowboard racer in the country and is America’s most promising Olympic hopeful in Parallel Slalom (PSL) and Parallel Giant Slalom (PGS) for 2014. A member of the U.S. World Cup Team, Wiencke was born in Minneapolis and raised in White Bear Lake. Wiencke has been competing nationally since the age of seven and internationally since her junior year in high school.
Growing up, Minnesota native Lindsey Vonn first met her idol Pikabo Street at a local ski swap. On Friday, however, Vonn played the part of role model as she visited with hundreds of fans at Afton Alps ski area in Hastings.
The Park boys soccer team beat Roseville 2-0 and fell to Stillwater 3-0 in two Suburban East Conference games, capping the regular season and earning the fifth seed in the Section 3AA tournament.
The Park girls soccer team split its last two games of the regular season. In a pair of Suburban East Conference contests, the Wolfpack won their final home game of the year, 3-0, over Roseville on Tuesday, before falling to Stillwater 1-0 on the road Thursday.
Coming off a last-second loss last week to Cretin-Derham Hall, East Ridge took out its frustrations on Forest Lake on the road Friday.

The Woodbury and East Ridge high school cheer teams put rivalries aside and worked together with the Salvation Army to collect coats for those in need with its Unite the Night coat drive during the East Ridge versus Woodbury varsity football game on Friday, Sept. 13, at Woodbury High School.
East Ridge earned a little revenge in winning the Cretin-Derham Hall tournament championship on Saturday in St. Paul.
Fresh off a loss to Mounds View, the East Ridge girls swimming and diving team flexed its muscles in a lopsided 107-74 win over Forest Lake on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Woodbury Middle School pool.
