An Old Cottage Grove resident is looking for the owner of a dog that wandered onto his property three days ago. The dog is all black with a white spot on its chest. It had a blue collar around its neck. It seems well-behaved, like it's been trained, said the resident, who asked to remain unnamed. Fire ravaged a home at 8090 Jeffery Lane in Cottage Grove over the weekend. The Cottage Grove Fire Department responded to the fire just after midnight Saturday, Sept. 19. The fire started on the deck, said Capt. Pete Koerner of the Cottage Grove Police Department, but investigators do not yet know how it started. The fire spread into an attic, blowing out the windows, and then spread into the house, he said. The home's roof collapsed. No one was injured in the fire, he said.
An evening out for one group of friends from Cottage Grove might include sitting in darkness in the most haunted places they can find, with hopes of catching audio or video of the paranormal.
Bill Zywiec, owner of Zywiec's Landscape and Garden Center said he spent so much time laboring in cornfields as a child, he resisted the idea for years of wandering around one for fun. Fall visitors to the garden center will see that Zywiec finally changed his mind. The garden center is debuting a dinosaur-themed corn maze Sept. 12 that will be open through the end of October. Zywiec said it was important to him that the maze be about more than just getting to the other end.
Cottage Grove native Jennifer Aga said she was so excited to see green grass after six months in the desert of Basra, Iraq, she was nearly licking the window of the airplane that carried her into Minnesota. "It was amazing seeing grass; and then seeing an actual body of water, that was pretty cool too," said Aga, a 2003 Park High School graduate.

The company is suspected to be running a scam. A resident in the 8300 block of Hadley Avenue reported credit card fraud Saturday, Aug. 29. A Cottage Grove man and Oakdale man have been charged for allegedly destroying three public restrooms in one day. Kyle Jordan Kipka, 20, of Cottage Grove and Chad Michael Medellin, 20, of Oakdale, allegedly smashed toilets, pulled a drinking fountain off a wall and smashed the top of a urinal on Dec. 14, 2008, according to the Washington County District Court Complaint. The first restroom police learned of was the SuperAmerica at 7570 10th Street in Oakdale, according to the complaint. At about 3:40 p.m., an employee at the gas station reported men's restroom damage.
When Park graduate Kim Walsh Borgan signed up to help animals rescued from the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina, she didn't expect to return to the Mississippi camp two more times. She also didn't expect to make a feature-length film about the animals left behind, nor did she expect to leave her career at an advertising agency to become a dog trainer.
Documentation shows two pieces of jewelry stolen from Selvig Jewelers in Cottage Grove are locked up in the Metro Gang Strike Force's evidence room, but one of the shop's co-owners says she's not holding out much hope that they'll ever get it back. The strike force was shut down July 17 after a report showed seized vehicles and cash that couldn't be accounted for.
A walk to the gas station to get a pack of cigarettes resulted in a night in jail for a Cottage Grove man who police later learned was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anthony Pieper, 19, was spotted walking in the area where two men involved with the armed robbery of the Sure-Lock Motel tried to flee police. He had been spending the evening at a friend's birthday party in Newport and left the party in the early morning hours last Tuesday headed for the Newport SuperAmerica along with his ex-girlfriend. He said he heard a helicopter overhead, but didn't think much of it.
