The Coyotes, who play in the Twin City Men's Adult Baseball League and were league champions in 2010, are currently undefeated at a perfect 6-0. Off a two-game sweep of the Bombers on Sunday, June 16, in the team's home opener at Woodridge Park, the Coyotes sit in first place in the TCMABL 18-plus American Division. After being bounced in the first round of the playoffs the last two years, the 'Yotes have added some much needed depth to the 2013 roster.
A record number of runners and walkers took part in this year's Strawberry Fest 5K and kid's 1-mile run at Kingston Park on Saturday, June 15. In the race, new champions were crowned for a third-straight year. Adam Peltprice was the top male finisher and Annalisa Low was the fastest female finisher in the race, held on a warm and sunny morning at Kingston Park.
East Ridge center J.C. Hassenauer has committed to play football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound lineman chose the defending national champion's scholarship offer over the University of Minnesota and Vanderbilt. Following a stellar junior season for the Raptors, Hassenauer was the offensive line MVP at three combines this spring: the Adidas combine in Detroit, the Nike combine in Memphis, and the Rivals.com combine in Chicago. He worked out in Tuscolusca this past weekend for Alabama coaches before committing on Monday.
Four years ago, Brady Hanson and his golf coach Bret Brookins talked about trying to win a state championship someday. Last week, he nearly made it happen. Hanson, a senior at East Ridge, finished in a tie for second place at the Class AAA state tournament, shooting a two-day 146 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids. "We made it our goal to win state," Hanson said. "Even though I didn't do that, it feels good to come really close. I knew if I worked hard and put in the effort I could possibly do it.
This spring, Andriel Aimua and Taylor Anderson became the first girls golfers from East Ridge to qualify for the state tournament. Last week, they showed they belonged. Both juniors, Aimua finished in a tie for 19th place out of 88 golfers and Anderson came in a tie for 26th place. Aimua shot a 164 at the two-day Class AAA tournament, held June 11 and 12 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids, including a 81 on the first day and a 83 on the second day.
The St. Paul Park Legion Post 98 baseball team learned last year that it's not how you start, it's how you finish. With that mindset, the Parkers' head coach Matt Doornink is hoping his team begins to turn things around soon. "We have a chance to win a lot of games," said Doornink, who is in his seventh year coaching St. Paul Park. "We just need to finish well. Overall we're hitting pretty well and our pitching is pretty good too. We just need to avoid the one big inning every game.
