The Lumberyard Pub opens Friday in the former Sail Away Cafe’ location, in Afton’s Old Village.
Fathers and their daughters had a magical night out together Saturday in Cottage Grove as District 833 Community Education held its annual Daddy Daughter Dance at Park High School. During the fairytale-themed event, guests danced and could take photos with Disney princesses. In its 12th year, the event also featured food, crafts and “princess trinkets” for purchase.
For the past five years the Islamic Society of Woodbury-East Metro has held worship services in a 2,500-square-foot office space on Commerce Drive in Woodbury. However, as the congregation grew it needed a larger place of worship, one to call its own. “We believe that they need a place where they can not only get religious education but get together with others of their same faith,” said Irfan Ali, Islamic Society spokesman. “Come pray or play.”

There is a competitive element to the Minnesota State High School League’s one-act play competition, but there also is support.
Incumbents Michelle Witte, Ron Kath and Joe Slavin all earned four-year terms on the District 833 School Board in Tuesday's election. Kath led the polls with 18 percent of the vote, followed closely by Witte with 17 percent and Slavin with 15 percent. Kath will be serving his fourth term. Witte and Slavin, who were both appointed to open seats, were elected to their first full term.

Woodbury resident Joe Slavin has seen how a school district functions from many sides. Not only has he seen it from behind the table as a current District 833 School Board member, but he’s also seen it from the eyes of a parent as well as from the perspective of a teacher and principal. “I’m able to understand things at a deeper level, ask questions at a deeper level,” he said. Slavin is seeking his first full term on the School Board in the Nov. 3 election.
Later this month the theater will be celebrating 40 years of performances and 40 years of memories.
School District 833 is selling an unused parcel sought by the city of Cottage Grove to help facilitate the Hy-Vee grocery store development.
