Longtime District 833 educator Nathan McGuire has been hired as the new head coach of the Woodbury High School girls basketball program. Since 1998 McGuire, a Cottage Grove resident, has taught kindergarten at Armstrong Elementary.

Rich Limpert, the man who started the boys lacrosse program in Woodbury, is leaving the Royals after being named head coach of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers this summer. Limpert amassed a 70-49 record at Woodbury over his nine seasons.

Led by its stifling defense, the Minnesota Sting, a Minor League football team which called East Ridge High School home this summer, won its their first Midwest Premier Football League Championship on Saturday Aug. 4, defeating the Brainerd Lumberjacks 27-0 in front of more than 700 fans at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Mickayla Hinkle hit the pool for the Olympic trials held recently in Omaha, Neb., where she competed for a spot on the U.S. Olympic swim team and a trip to London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Last year south Washington County hockey fans had the rare treat of seeing some of the NHL's stars play a game at a local rink. This summer, Hastings natives Derek Stepan, Taylor Chorney and Jeff Taffe are holding their second-annual charity game on Wednesday, July 11, at the Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

This year, the National Federation of State High School Associations mandated the use of Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) approved bats in high school baseball games across the nation in order to reduce the risk of injury to the players.  BBCOR bats act more like wood bats and less like the recent aluminum or composite bats. BBCOR reduces the trampoline effect, or pop, the ball has off the bat.
