East Ridge boys basketball: Raptors stumble out of the gates

Ranked as high as ninth in the state by some publications in the preseason polls, the East Ridge boys basketball team learned last week opposing teams will be ready for them.

East Ridge (1-2) opened the season by falling to Chanhassen 80-78 in overtime on the road on Nov. 23, then thumped Mahtomedi 75-49 on Nov. 26 before losing 63-58 to Shakopee in the Anoka-Ramsey Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 30.

In the season opener against Chanhassen (1-2), East Ridge junior Jake Knupp led the Raptors with 23 points, four assists and two steals. Senior forward Brian Ishola netted 22 points and added eight rebounds, four steals and three assists and Parker Moquist chipped in 15 points.

In the win over Mahtomedi (2-1) four Raptors scored in double figures, led by junior guard Sid Tomes who had a game-high 18 points. Knupp scored 17 points and Ishola and sophomore Seth Green each scored 12 points.

In the loss to Shakopee (1-1), Tomes netted a team-high 13 points, Knupp scored 12 points and senior Ryan Mathis had 10 points.

East Ridge held its home opener in Woodbury against St. Louis Park (0-3) on Tuesday, Dec. 3, after the Bulletin went to press. Next, the Raptors welcome Minneapolis Southwest (0-2) to The Perch on Friday.
