2014 Spring Preview: New coach takes reigns of experienced East Ridge girls lacrosse team

The East Ridge girls lacrosse team will usher in a new head coach and return an experienced group.

The Raptors finished 11-5 and lost 17-5 to Stillwater in the section championship. The Ponies went on to place fourth at the state tournament.

Andrea Peterson takes over as head coach at East Ridge after spending last season as the assistant head coach at Orono High School. Former head coach Amy Fortney resigned to take a position at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

For three years, Peterson coached seventh and eighth grade girls lacrosse in Eden Prairie. Pederson played four seasons at Eden Prairie and helped lead the team to three undefeated seasons and three state titles. Peterson went on to play at Iowa State University, a Division II program.

The Raptors will return all of their starters from last year’s team. Returners who played at the varsity level or junior varsity level include Michelle Bailey and Bridget Bregel, Ella Frazer, Emily Gamm, Kayla Gohmann, Jenna and Kayla Griffith, Jessica and Sam Hammer and Erin Plourde.

“We have a complete section team returning this year so we definitely have the potential to go to state,” Peterson said.

The roster also features two players who became the first Raptors to commit to playing in college.

Stillwater will likely stand in East Ridge’s way once again this season in the section playoffs.

The Raptors will begin the season April 17 against Mahtomedi at East Ridge High School.
