2014 Spring Preview: Park boys golf team 'excited to get on the course'

An active summer on the course hopes to pay dividends for the Park boys golf team this spring.

Under the guidance of head coach Chad Salay, who is in his third year leading the Wolfpack, the youthful Park boys finished in 10th place with a total score of 348 in the 12-team Section 3AAA tournament at Goodrich Golf Course, 35 strokes back of the cut to advance to the second day of the two-day event. None of the Wolfpack boys were able to move on to the second day as individuals as well.

“Many of the kids played in summer tournaments on the Minnesota Junior PGA circuit so we are hoping that experience will pay off this season,” Salay said.

Park welcomes back its top golfer from a year ago in captain Alex Holland, along with other key players in Mitch Reagan and Kyle Salmon.

Other additions Salay said he’s excited about include Connor McCauley, Jason Miner and Ryan Newpower. Also, former Park girls hockey coach Darren Reiter joins the team as an assistant coach. The team does need to fill the golf shoes of Chris Peterson, Sam Pines, Dylan Buehl and Ryan Olson, however.

Park hopes to open the year at a tournament in Wisconsin Dells on April 11-12. The Wolfpack has a slew of matches at some of the top courses in the area this season, including at Troy Burne Golf Club, North Oaks Golf Club, The Wilds and Stillwater Country Club.

“We have a great schedule of events this year,” Salay said. “Our kids will get to play some of the top courses in Minnesota and Wisconsin. They are very excited to get on the course.”
