East Ridge boys hockey: Raptors edge Apple Valley 5-4

A strong second period allowed East Ridge to overwhelm Apple Valley last week 5-4 in Apple Valley.

The Raptors poured in three goals in the second period Jan. 21 to grab a 5-3 lead. Five different players scored a goal for East Ridge in the non-conference win.

Jarrod Ronquillo, Joey Schutz, Kevin Donohue, Jake Nickoloff and Derek Hammer all scored for the Raptors.

East Ridge outshot the Eagles 46-25 for the game and rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the first period.

Tyler Guck finished with 14 saves for the win.

East Ridge made it two wins in a row as Colin Borsheim and Derek Hammer lifted the Raptors in the third period to a 4-2 victory Thursday over Suburban East Conference foe Hastings in Hastings.

The Raptors (8-9-1, 6-7 SEC) fell behind 2-0 before scoring the game’s next four goals. Frans Koskinen and Jake Nickoloff pumped in goals in the first period to tie the game while Borsheim and Hammer each scored in the third period for the win over the Raiders (8-10-2; 4-6-2 SEC).

Borsheim scored 2 minutes, 13 seconds into the third period and Hammer struck at 3:20 to secure the win.

East Ridge finished with 33 shots on goal for the game. Guck made 26 saves for the victory in goal.

East Ridge’s run came to an end, though, when Austin Ramirez scored 2 minutes, 56 seconds into overtime to give Mounds View a 3-2 victory over the Raptors on Saturday at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

Jack Dwyer gave the Raptors a 2-1 lead 2:05 in the third period, but Wyatt Meyer scored a power-play goal for the Mustangs (7-10; 6-6 SEC) to tie the game at 6:03 of the third period.

Hammer gave East Ridge a 1-0 lead at 14:09 of the first period but Mounds View tied it with 29 seconds left in the second period.

East Ridge outshot the Mustangs 29-24 but gave up two power-play goals. The Raptors finished 1-for-5 on the power play.

East Ridge faces Forest Lake (10-5-4; 6-2-4 SEC) Thursday in Forest Lake.
