Park girls hockey: Wolfpack earns draw with Bears

The Park girls hockey team tied for the second time this season in a 1-1 draw with Suburban East Conference foe White Bear Lake.

The Wolfpack (1-8-2; 0-5-2 SEC) had a chance to win the game, holding a 1-0 lead into the final minutes on Tuesday, Dec. 10, but the Bears (4-5-2; 1-4-2 SEC) scored with 1 minute, 41 second remaining in the third period. Madison Nelson put the Wolfpack up originally with a first-period goal, assisted by Dani Perry at 11:24.

Paige Press had 26 saves in goal for the Wolfpack with a .963 save percentage. She stopped 14 shots in the final period and overtime alone.

A few days later, a third-period surge by Stillwater dropped the Wolfpack in a 6-3 loss on Saturday, Dec. 14. The Wolfpack had stayed close for much of the game and held a lead at one point.

Megan Palmquist tied the game 1-1 on a first period power play for the Wolfpack at 16:00. Mariah Troje put the Wolfpack ahead 2-1 on an assist from Maria Houle early in the second period.

However, in the third period, the Wolfpack gave up three unanswered goals as they fell behind 4-2. Nelson scored on a power play, assisted by Emma Waller, which brought the Wolfpack within a goal. But, the Ponies (6-3-1; 5-1-1 SEC) kept coming offensively with another two goals in the next five minutes for a 6-3 lead.

Despite the six goals, Press stopped 44 shots and had an .898 save percentage for the Wolfpack. They had were outshot 50-22 by the Ponies, but the Wolfpack did go 3-0 on the penalty kill.

The Wolfpack (1-8-2, 0-5-2 SEC) have a couple more Suburban East Conference games coming up before the Christmas break. They host Forest Lake (4-4-1, 3-4 SEC) on Thursday and play at Cretin-Derham Hall (7-4, 5-2 SEC) on Saturday. The Wolfpack have gone 1-1-2 in their past four games.
