Park girls hockey: Wolfpack notch first win

Maira Houle and Hailey Nadeau-Robinson each scored goals as the Park Wolfpack girls hockey team notched its first win of season.

The Wolfpack beat the South St. Paul Packers 2-1 on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Cottage Grove Ice Arena. Houle scored on a power play for the Wolfpack at the 16:28 mark in the first period for a 1-0 lead. Dani Perry assisted on the goal. Nadeau-Robinson gave the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead on assists from Mariah Troje and Abby Kirsch in the second period.

The Wolfpack stopped South St. Paul on the power play seven times, allowing only one power play goal.

The Packers held the edge on shots, 29-28. The Wolfpack held on for the win after Brigette Miller’s power play goal that cut the Wolfpack lead to a goal in the third period. Press stopped 28 shots in earning her first win in net for the season, and she had a .966 save percentage.

The Wolfpack followed up the win with a tie against Hastings 1-1 at the Cottage Grove Arena on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Raiders had out-shot the Wolfpack 39-28, but the Wolfpack also stopped all four of the Raiders’ power plays.

Houle put the Wolfpack on the board first with a goal in the first period on an assist from Maddy Jeske at the 9:22 mark. Sami Claussen tied the game for the Raiders. Press had 38 saves and a .974 save percentage.

The Wolfpack (1-7-1, 0-4-1 Suburban East) have rebounded from a 0-7 start with a 1-0-1 mark the past two games. They had dropped to 0-7 when they fell 4-0 to Mounds View at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The Mustangs scored two first-period goals and never looked back. The Wolfpack were outshot 29-10. Press stopped 25 shots in goal for the Wolfpack.

This week, the Wolfpack hosted White Bear Lake on Tuesday and will play at Stillwater on Saturday.
