New Life Academy volleyball: Eagles in section’s final four

The New Life Academy volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the Section 4A tournament with wins over Bethany Academy and Legacy Christian Academy last week.

The Eagles, the third seed in the section, won 3-0 over 14th seeded Bethany Academy (9-15) on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Woodbury with scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-14.

Sophomore Abby Thor led the offense with a team-high 14 kills for New Life (21-10). Sophomore Kara Stenerson had a strong all-around game with 32 assists, six aces, five digs and two kills. Freshman Hannah Nelson chipped in seven kills and two digs and sophomore Abby Gorter added three kills, four aces and four digs.

Two days later, New Life beat sixth-seeded Legacy Christian (16-13) 3-0 with scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-14 at NLA. Individual statistics from the Legacy match were not made available.

The wins put the Eagles in the section’s final four.

New Life, which is ranked ninth in Class A in the QRF poll, took on No. 2 seed Heritage Academy (16-15-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 29, on the road. Heritage is ranked 35th by the QRF. No. 1 seed Southwest Christian (26-5) takes on fourth-seeded Mayer Lutheran in the other semifinal. Southwest Christian is ranked No. 1 in Class A by the QRF. Mayer Lutheran is ranked eighth by the QRF. The Section 4A championship will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, at Bloomington Kennedy High School.
