New Life Academy boys basketball: Eagles start second half in slump

There was one thing the New Life Academy boys basketball team couldn't afford to do in the second half of the season, and that was slump.

However, the Eagles (7-10, 4-6 in Minnesota Christian Athletic Association) have now lost four straight games dating back to Jan. 22.

On Tuesday, the Eagles hosted PACT Charter, and lost 76-70 after being outscored 43-37 in the second half.

PACT (7-10, 4-6) had a very balanced attack. Senior guard Drew Zieroth led the way with 19 points, while junior forward Daniel Nelson pitched in 18. Senior guard Jayden Stone and senior forward Austin Stone scored 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Sophomore guard Sam Horner led the Eagles with 14 points. Senior guard Cameron Duffy finished with 11, while sophomore forward Conrad Engstrom added 10.

The Eagles hoped to bounce back on Friday on the road against Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity, a team that New Life beat earlier this season.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the results weren't the same as the first go-around. The Eagles fell 84-69.

The key going into the game was to shut down Nick Machemehi. The Eagles weren't able to contain the junior guard, though, as he finished with a game-high 36 points.

Junior forward Spencer Radtke and senior center Peyton Thiry added 16 and 15 points, respectively. Only six players from Lester Prairie (10-9, 6-4) scored.

Junior guard John Horner led the Eagles with 11 points, while junior forward Derek Wu scored 11.

The Eagles will have a good opportunity to rebound as they have two home games this week.

On Tuesday, New Life hosted Trinity at River Ridge (5-14, 2-7), after the Bulletin went to print. Next, on Thursday, NLA welcomes Southwest Christian (6-10, 4-5) to Woodbury.

The Eagles are only six games out from first place in the conference, sitting in sixth place. Legacy Christian (9-10, 3-6), PACT, Trinity at River Ridge and Bethany Academy (4-13, 0-10) sit below New Life in the standings, while Marantha Christian (17-1, 10-0) is on top.
