Raptors, NLA girls, to host Section 4A soccer openers

Seedings were announced for the Section 4A boys and girls soccer playoffs on Friday and both the East Ridge boys and girls squads will begin their inaugural sectional at home in The Raptors' Nest.

Likewise, the New Life girls will also host their sectional opener, while the Eagles boys will travel to Roseville.

Section 4A Girls

The East Ridge girls club was awarded a No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 St. Paul Johnson on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m., with a second-round game -- barring upsets -- likely to be played at No. 4 South St. Paul six days later. The Packers topped the Raptors, 2-0, in the season opener back in August.

Coach Mark Abboud's club is 6-6-1 on the season after a scoreless tie at Stillwater and a 3-0 win versus Hastings -- both Class AA teams -- and the Raptors leader has often stated it is his team's goal to reach the state tournament in its opening campaign.

Mahtomedi, the defending Class A champion, is the No. 1 seed in 4A with a 9-5-3 record. A sectional showdown between the two teams could occur in the semifinal round, hosted by the Zephyrs, on Thursday, Oct. 22 with the 4A final slated to be played at the home of the highest remaining seed on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The New Life Academy girls, a No. 8 seed in 4A, hosts St. Paul Como Park next Tuesday at 4 p.m. on their home pitch at the Bielenberg Sports Center. With a first-round win, the Eagles would travel to Mahtomedi on Monday, Oct. 19.

Section 4A Boys

The East Ridge boys soccer team, 2-12-1 so far in 2009 after earning their second win of the season last Monday at North St. Paul, secured a No. 7 seed for their first-ever playoff appearance and welcome St. Croix Lutheran to the Nest on Monday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.

A victory over their guests would send the Raptors into a quarterfinal-round match at No. 2 seed Mahtomedi on Oct. 19, with sectional semifinals slated for Oct. 22 and final on Oct. 24.

The New Life boys claimed the No. 9 seed and will pack their bags to play at Concordia Academy-Roseville on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. and would take on top-seeded St. Paul Como Park in round two if they can earn an opening-game victory.
