Kuemmel's Corner: Park announces ninth Hall of Fame class

Park High School is honored to announce the ninth class for induction in the Park High School Hall of Fame. These alumni are being recognized for this prestigious award because of their athletic excellence while representing Park High School. The coaches and community members are being honored for their commitment to the youth in our community and their dedication and support of Park athletics. The following are the individuals and teams selected into the 2013 Hall of Fame:

Kara (Bloomquist) Drekonja (Class of ‘92): Kara was a cross-country and track standout at Park, and also participated in Nordic skiing. She qualified for the state meet in the 800 her senior year. Bloomquist was an All-American runner at Gustavus Adolphus College and held numerous school records there.

Vernon Hall (Class of ‘45): Vern played football, basketball, baseball and track at St. Paul Park High School. He loved serving on the decorating committee for prom and other school events. Vern was a World War II veteran and passed away in 2004.

Kristen Schmidt (Class of ‘02): Kristen earned All-Conference honors in volleyball, basketball and softball. She was an all-state pitcher and led her team to the state tournament all four years (finishing second in 2002 when she was the Metro player of the year). She went on to earn all-American honors at Concordia University.

Daniel Storlien (Class of ‘89): Dan is one of the best soccer players to come out of Park. He was captain of the 1988 state runner-up team. Storlien went on to play at St. Mary’s University and UW-Green Bay. He is currently a social studies teacher and head boys soccer coach at Bloomington Jefferson High School and one of the top coaches for the Minnesota Thunder Academy.

Henry Tressel (Coach): Hank coached a variety of sports for over fifty years in District 833, including football, baseball and softball. He started the alpine and Nordic ski programs in the district, and led the Park boys golf team to three state tournaments. In 2008 the team won Park’s only state championship in a boys sport.

1988 Girls Track State Championship Team: This will be the first team inducted into the Hall of Fame on the 25th anniversary of their state championship (Park’s first ever as a school). Coached by Bob Meyer, 10 individuals represented Park in the state track and field meet and took home first place honors, led by Sue Chopskie and Anne Arlich.

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Mississippi Dunes Golf Course in Cottage Grove.
