Baseball: Cottage Grove Coyotes off to 6-0 start

With six games under its belt, the Cottage Grove Coyotes men's baseball team has swung into action this summer.

The Coyotes, who play in the Twin City Men's Adult Baseball League and were league champions in 2010, are currently undefeated at a perfect 6-0.

Off a two-game sweep of the Bombers on Sunday, June 16, in the team's home opener at Woodridge Park, the Coyotes sit in first place in the TCMABL 18-plus American Division.

After being bounced in the first round of the playoffs the last two years, the 'Yotes have added some much needed depth to the 2013 roster. The core of the team is still intact with Matt Ruben and Roger Morrison anchoring the pitching staff. Familiar faces in the lineup include Ross Blesener, David Buckner, Hans Heggernes, Dan Kamrath, TJ Ramey, Mike Schirra, Randy Schmidt, Scott Seivert and Nick Tuckner. The Coyotes have also added some TCAMBL veterans to the team, including Nate Bochet, Mike Lippert and Joe Paul as well as additional pitching depth in Matt Doornink.

In the wins over the Bombers (5-3) the Coyotes' allowed just two runs in the two games. Cottage Grove won the first game 4-0 and the second game 6-2.

In game No. 1, Cottage Grove scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Seivert provided the big hit with a two-run home run. In addition, Kamrath and Ruben were each 2-for-3. Ruben pitched a gem on the mound, going the distance, allowing just four hits and striking out eight.

In game No. 2, the Coyotes broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Cottage Grove then tacked insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to secure the victory. Cottage Grove had 13 hits in the game. Lippert led the way, going 3-for-4 in the game. In addition, Ruben was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Heggernes and Seivert were each 2-for-4 and Malcolm Kellner was 2-for-3 with two RBI. On the bump, Roger Morrison through a complete-game, four-hitter, allowing two earned runs and striking out nine for the win.

Cottage Grove takes on the Cyclones (0-6) this week, on Sunday, June 23, at Osseo High School. The Coyotes return to Woodridge the following week to take on the Expos (0-6).
