East Ridge boys tennis: Raptors move to 2-0 on season

The East Ridge boys tennis team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-2 Suburban East Conference victory over Roseville on the road last week.

East Ridge won three of its four singles matches and two of the three doubles contests for the win. Last year, East Ridge fell 4-3 to the Raiders, losing three three-set matches.

"I'm proud of my guys for winning three of three tie-breakers," East Ridge head coach Suzie Heideman said. "I was very proud of my team."

In singles, the Raptors' No. 2 player Vishaal Gupta, a sophomore, won 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) over Alex Polydoroff, freshman Nikhil Gupta won 6-1, 6-2 over Jim Mooney at third singles and sophomore Riley Pratt won 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles. East Ridge junior Zak Nigatu lost a close match, 7-6 (7-0), 2-6, 5-7, to Ross Stecklien at No. 1 singles.

"Zak's leg cramped up at 5-5 in the third set and he played through it," Heideman said. "It was a great match."

In doubles, the Raptors' top combo of junior Greg Sharrow, and seventh grader Ben Van der sman, won 6-4, 6-1 and the No. 2 duo of juniors Phillip Cai and Evan Lu won 7-6 (2), 6-3.

East Ridge was at White Bear Lake on Tuesday, April 23, after the Bulletin went to press. Next, the Raptors take on Woodbury at home on Thursday, April 25, then host an eight-team tournament along with District 833 foes Park and Woodbury on Saturday.
