Park boys swimming & diving: Wolfpack third at True Team section meet

The Park boys swimming and diving team topped White Bear Lake to earn third place in the Section 4AA True Team meet on Saturday, January 19.

Park scored 394 points in the meet to earn third out of the four teams competing. Stillwater (747 points) won the meet. Woodbury (548 points) took second. White Bear Lake (348 points) was fourth.

At True Team meets, every competitor on every team scores points for his or her team. First place in individual events garners 16 points. A first-place relay team earns 32 points. The last place finisher in each individual event scores 1 point. In relays, the last-place team gets 2 points.

Park senior Michele Pau turned in the Wolfpack's only first-place finish, taking the gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.71 seconds. Additionally, freshman Aaron Lewis placed ninth (55.01) in the event.

Park scored 34 points in the 200-yard freestyle. Park senior Matt Henry earned fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 56.57 seconds. Jesse Busse of Stillwater (1:52.90) won the event. Park sophomore Adam Raymond (1:57.09) was sixth in the event, Lewis (2:03.48) took 10th and sophomore Brandon Denn placed 15th (2:21.01). Raymond also earned fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.73), while Henry took seventh (5:16.48) and eighth grader Mack Christianson placed ninth (5:31.07). The Wolfpack had 33 points total in the event.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Park scored 32 points. Pau led the Wolfpack with a second place finish in 23.38 seconds. Sophomore Jarrett Mansergh (24.71) took eighth, senior Nick Popowitz placed 12th (25.72) and Nick Germscheid (27.41) was 14th.

Park's divers earned 36 points. Germscheid, a sophomore, led the way with a score of 289.55 to earn fourth place. Also, junior Kevin Roettger scored 252.60 for seventh and senior Nate Pearson and freshman Robert Heitmann each scored 216.20 to tie for 10th overall.

Park fared very well in the relay events. The 400-yard free relay team of Raymond, Henry, Mansergh and Pau took second place with a time of 3:31.37 for 30 points. Stillwater (3:26.98) won the event. The team of Lewis, Christianson, Popowitz and Sean Gill placed eighth (3:52.93) in the event for another 18 points. In the 200-yard freestyle, Park's team of Mansergh, Pau, Henry and Raymond placed fourth with a time of 1:37.38, which garnered 26 points. The team of Lewis, junior Eric Solem, senior Keegan Greene and Gill earned eighth in the event (1:45.33) for an additional 18 points. Also, the team of Popowitz, Greene, Solem and Christianson placed eighth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:58.62 for 18 points.

Also, in individual events, Mansergh placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.85), followed by Solem who was seventh (1:01.80) in the event. Popowitz and Solem went seventh and eighth, respectively with times of 1:07.21 and 1:08.13 in the 100-yard backstroke and Christianson placed 11th in the 200-yard individual medley.

Prior to the True Team meet, Park fell 94-81 to Forest Lake on Tuesday. The Rangers mathematically clinched the meet at 94-43 with three events remaining.

Pau, Germscheid and Raymond had the Wolfpack's only wins of the meet. Pau won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.63, Raymond took first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.01 and Germscheid won the diving contest with a score of 180.55 points.

Park had a non-conference dual meet with Tartan on Tuesday, Jan. 22, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Wolfpack welcomes conference foe Hastings to Cottage Grove on Thursday, Jan. 24. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
