Newport City Council acknowledges meeting law oversight

The city of Newport acknowledged a recent open meeting law violation last week when the City Council summarized the recent performance evaluation of its city administrator, an action that failed to occur during its March 20 meeting.

The Minnesota Open Meeting Law requires that governing bodies summarize the findings of performance evaluations of city personnel at the next regular meeting.

City Administrator Deb Hill was evaluated during a closed meeting March 6 but the council did not provide a summary at its next meeting, which was March 20.

This was the second time in a year that the City Council did not summarize Hill’s evaluation.

Mayor Tim Geraghty said last week that city officials simply forgot and did not intentionally withhold the evaluation’s findings. He praised Hill, who was the city’s former accountant, and said they were satisfied with her work throughout the last year.
