Estimates point to population growth for local cities

Cottage Grove’s population is expected to reach nearly 50,000 within about 25 years, according to new Twin Cities population estimates.

The Metropolitan Council, which oversees regional growth, recently released a draft update of its 30-year population forecast for the seven-county metropolitan area.

Cottage Grove’s population is predicted to grow from the 34,589 tallied in the 2010 census to 49,300 by 2040. St. Paul Park is forecast to increase from 5,273 to 7,900. Newport will steadily climb from 3,435 to 4,600, according to the Met Council.

Woodbury’s growth is estimated to far outpace all other Washington County communities. Its current population of roughly 62,000 is expected to grow to 87,200 by 2040.

The total Washington County population will increase from 238,000 to 337,000, the Met Council predicted.

The population estimates are used for comprehensive planning by cities, counties and townships.
