Park batting cage collapses on golfers, causing minor injuries; cage use halted

Park High School temporarily suspended use of two indoor batting cages after three student athletes suffered minor injuries Tuesday when one of the cages collapsed.

Three members of the Park boys golf team were in one of the cages in the school gymnasium Tuesday afternoon when it collapsed, said Kay Pavel, District 833 communications specialist.

"They weren't seriously injured," she said. "They just had some cuts."

An ambulance was called at about 3:30 p.m., but none of the students required assistance. They all went home with their parents, Pavel said.

The golf teams use the indoor batting cages because of the poor weather conditions. Pavel said it is not yet clear why the cage collapsed.

Neither of the two cages will be used until the problem is identified and fixed.

"Student safety is our highest priority," said Keith Ryskoski, assistant superintendent for secondary education. "We will work diligently to ensure that the athletic equipment at Park is in excellent working condition."
