School district opts for outside legal firm

With the promotion of Mark Porter, former assistant superintendent of human services and legal services, to superintendent, School District 833 found itself in need of legal help.

The School Board approved a contract, July 9, to hire the law firm of Ratwik, Roszak and Maloney for one year at $1,000 per month for basic legal services with additional work on an hourly billing basis.

When Denise Griffith was recently hired as director of human services, her salary was reduced from that of Porter's because it did not include legal services, Porter said.

The savings was not included as a budget adjustment, Porter said, because it was assumed there would be a slight increase in legal services.

Included in the monthly fee is immediate access to legal advice only to designated administrators. It includes telephone conversations and written responses by e-mail.

After a year, the firm's agreement will be reviewed.
