Driver sustains minor injuries after colliding with Cottage Grove school bus

Thick fog was a contributing factor in a bus versus vehicle accident early Friday morning that sent the driver of a Ford Focus to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cottage Grove police and ambulance responded to the intersection of 70th Street and Idsen Avenue shortly before 7:15 a.m.

According to the preliminary police report, the District 833 school bus, heading south, was stopped on Idsen Avenue. The bus driver, Trevor Bain, 24, of Cottage Grove, said he did not see any vehicles approaching from the west when he began crossing 70th Street.

“Morning conditions were very foggy and there was limited visibility,” Cottage Grove Police Capt. Pete Koerner said.

James Nevin, 43, of Cottage Grove, who was eastbound on 70th Street in a Ford Focus, collided with the bus. Koerner said Nevin reported looking into the sun and that fog skewed the visibility of the intersection.

“When (Nevin) saw the bus he was unable to take any evasive action,” Koerner said.

Nevin was transported with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Due to the weather conditions, no citations were given. However, Bain received a warning for failure to yield.

The Minnesota State Patrol also responded.

This is the second accident of this nature this school year. The first one occurred in January at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and 95th Street.
