A Cottage Grove woman remained in critical condition Wednesday following a two-car crash a day earlier in Newport.

Deborah J. Burrell, 61, of Cottage Grove, was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Burrell was one of the drivers in a head-on crash shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday on Hastings Avenue, south of the 65th Street intersection, near Highway 61. She was northbound when her car collided with a southbound vehicle driven by Hailey J. Ewald, 18, also of Cottage Grove, Newport police said.

Burrell was transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital. Ewald refused medical attention at the scene, according to the police report.

Burrell’s car went into a ditch after the collision and had major damage to the front end. Ewald’s car also sustained front-end damage.

Police Chief Curt Montgomery said the crash investigation was active and it was being reviewed to determine fault and whether charges will be filed.
