Washington County authorities warn of phone scam

Authorities are warning area citizens of a telephone scam.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said residents have been receiving phone calls from “Police Protection -727-754-7969.” It’s a scam involving someone asking for donations to the “Police Protective Fund” and seeking credit card numbers and money. In at least one instance, a resident received a letter with the same premise.

The sheriff’s office and other local law enforcement agencies do not cold-call residents seeking donations. Authorities are telling residents to not provide bank account information, credit card numbers or transfer funds over the phone to anyone suspected of being involved in a scam.

The sheriff’s office encourages residents who receive this type of message to report it by calling 651-430-7600. Recording the phone number, keeping documentation from the call or providing paperwork is helpful in a law enforcement investigation.
