A fire damaged a Cottage Grove home Thursday morning, spreading from one floor to another before it was extinguished.

Firefighters were called to 8279 Hyde Court after 10:30 a.m. when someone reported seeing smoke coming from the home and hearing an alarm. The house is owned by John Hiber, who was not home at the time of the fire, authorities said.

The fire appeared to have started in a lower level bedroom and spread to an upper-level bedroom, Fire Chief Rick Redenius said. There was heavy damage to the lower-level bedroom, and smoke damage throughout the house.

Police safely removed a dog from the home before firefighters arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation as officials need to meet with the homeowner, Redenius said.

Woodbury and Newport crews were called to assist Cottage Grove firefighters.
