Newport police reports for Dec. 21: Vehicle tampering, theft, attempted burglary

Recent criminal activity reported in Newport:

Vehicle tampering

A Cottage Grove man reported Nov. 5 that someone had tampered with a semitrailer he was driving in Newport. The man saw tools near the truck and then discovered mechanical problems while driving. Someone had loosened bolts, causing $4,000 in damage.


A Newport woman reported Nov. 10 that someone entered her garage and stole an iPad, iPod, bottle of gin and $20 from a garage in the 1200 block of Kolff Court.

A Newport man reported Nov. 11 that someone broke into his garage in the 1100 block of Mark Court, but nothing was stolen.

SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported a $57 gas drive-off on Nov. 20.

Newport Auto Sales, 1390 Hastings Ave., reported Nov. 22 that someone sawed off and stole catalytic converters from several vehicles in the lot. Loss: $1,000.

SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported a $62 gas drive-off on Nov. 25. Later that day the station reported another gas drive-off worth $38.

Attempted burglary

A Newport man called police about 1:45 a.m. Nov. 24 to report that he went to his garage to smoke a cigarette and found an unknown man in the garage. The suspect hit the homeowner and ran out of the garage. Police from multiple agencies helped to search for the suspect, but he was not located.
