Police: Cottage Grove man, 85, killed when struck by car after getting mail

An 85-year-old Cottage Grove man was killed Tuesday when he was hit by a car while crossing 70th Street after retrieving his mail, police said.

The man was hit by an SUV that was headed westbound on 70th Street at Goodview Avenue, near the Cottage Grove-St. Paul Park border. The crash happened about 2 p.m.

Paramedics found the man unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was being withheld Tuesday pending family notification.

Information about the female driver was not immediately available. She was cooperating with police during the investigation.

“There was no signs of impairment” on the driver, Cottage Grove Police Capt. Pete Koerner said.

Goodview Avenue is near the top of a hill on 70th Street. It was not immediately known whether the driver saw the man.

“There’s a lot of factors,” Koerner said.

Cottage Grove police continued to investigate Tuesday evening and were assisted by Woodbury police in the accident reconstruction.
