Newport police reports for Sept. 4: Drugs, property damage, theft, assault

Recent criminal activity reported in Newport:

Property damage

A Newport man reported July 28 that an unknown vehicle struck his mailbox and left behind car parts in the 2800 block of Sterling Avenue. Damage was estimated at $30.

Newport Elementary School, 851 Sixth Ave., reported Aug. 5 that wiring on an air conditioning unit was damaged. The damage was estimated at $300.

A Newport woman reported Aug. 12 that juveniles were damaging mailboxes in the 300 block of 16th Street. The woman didn’t want to report monetary damage, only that having her mailbox door bent “is getting annoying,” the report said.


A Newport woman reported Aug. 8 that she was assaulted by a Newport man at her home in the 1100 block of Mark Court. The woman said the man also broke her phone.


A St. Paul woman reported Aug. 15 that a potted plant was stolen from a headstone at Newport Cemetery.


Police and firefighters were called to assist with a trailer fire on Highway 61 near Interstate 494 about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 17.


A Newport woman reported Aug. 14 that she walked into a motel room in the 1200 block of Hastings Avenue and saw her fiance, a South St. Paul man, smoking methamphetamine. A verbal altercation between the two was reported, but the man left before police arrived and no arrests were made.
