Cottage Grove police reports for Aug. 23: Theft, suspicious activity, exotic cat, burglary

Recent criminal activity reported in Cottage Grove:


Kohl's, 7990 Hardwood Ave., reported thefts on Aug. 12. An 18-year-old Hastings woman was cited for shoplifting. In a separate case later that day, a 20-year-old Hastings woman was cited for shoplifting.

Kohl's, 7990 Hardwood Ave., reported a theft Aug. 13. A 19-year-old West St. Paul woman was cited for shoplifting.

A Cottage Grove woman reported Aug. 13 that a couple of weeks ago she put her $9,000 ring in a jewelry box in her home in the 6700 block of Meadow Grass Lane. She said that on Aug. 10 she noticed it had been taken.

A Cottage Grove man called police at 1 a.m. Aug. 14 to report that his vehicle had just been stolen from his driveway in the 7600 block of Hillside Trail. Police found the vehicle a couple of blocks away in the middle of the street near Hillside Park. The vehicle was unoccupied but the engine was still running. The man had inadvertently left the keys in the vehicle. Police set up a perimeter in the area to try to locate a suspect, but could not find one.

Menards, 9000 East Point Douglas Road, reported a theft Aug. 14. A 21-year-old St. Paul Park woman was cited for shoplifting.

Suspicious activity

Police were dispatched to Cottage Grove Elementary School shortly before 11 p.m. Aug. 1 for a suspicious vehicle. A man and woman were found inside the vehicle with fogged windows. They were told to leave the area.

Suspicious vehicle

Police were dispatched after 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 to Timber Crest Drive and Pine Crest Drive on a report of a suspicious vehicle. The caller said someone in a red vehicle was talking to children in the area, but then left before police arrived. Police checked the area but could not locate the vehicle.

Underage drinking

A 20-year-old North Branch, Minn., woman was ticketed for underage consumption after police were called to Mississippi Dunes Golf Links, at 1:45 a.m. Aug. 4 for a reported domestic. The woman and her mother had a verbal fight in the parking lot.

Protective order violation

A Cottage Grove man was ticketed for violating a no-contact order requested by his wife. The woman called police about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 6 to report that her husband had been at the home in the 9100 block of Jareau Avenue, in violation of a protective order.

The 33-year-old man had left when police arrived. They mailed him a citation for violating an order for protection.


A Cottage Grove woman reported Aug. 7 that she heard glass breaking at a neighbor's house shortly before 3 a.m. and then saw an unknown male in her yard in the 7400 block of Hidden Valley Court. Police found a broken window on the house next door. That homeowner reported that a video game system was stolen.


Police stopped a vehicle Aug. 11 for speeding and ended up citing the driver for drugs and other violations. The officer made the traffic stop at Hadley Avenue and 90th Street and smelled a strong odor of marijuana inside the vehicle. The 18-year-old Cottage Grove man driving the vehicle was cited for possession of a small amount of marijuana, open bottle, speeding, unreasonable acceleration and minor possession of alcohol.

Exotic cat

Cottage Grove residents called police Aug. 12 to ask if they're allowed to have a savannah cat in the city. The cat is a mixed-breed that is larger than a typical house cat. Police said they can have the cat but it must be declawed and licensed.


Police and firefighters were called about 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 to a vehicle fire in the parking lot of Menards, 9000 East Point Douglas Road. The vehicle's engine compartment was engulfed. No injuries were reported.


Police were called about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 12 to a disturbance in the 7700 block of Hemingway Avenue. There was a verbal dispute, but in the process of handling that police found a 14-year-old Rhinelander, Wis., girl who was a runaway. She tried to run from police but was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit. She was intoxicated and cited for minor consumption.


A Cottage Grove woman reported Aug. 15 that someone covered her vehicle in Post-It notes and formed a trail of the paper notes leading up to the front door of her home in the 7900 block of 63rd Street.
