South Washington County residents will gather next week to visit with their neighbors, enjoy grilled food and brush elbows with their local public safety workers.

On Tuesday evening, Aug. 6, Cottage Grove neighborhoods will celebrate Night to Unite, while St. Paul Park will hold one community event for National Night Out. Newport residents will gather in one place for their Night to Unite celebration.

Cottage Grove

In Cottage Grove, families will gather at neighborhood parties throughout town. Police, firefighters and EMTs will stop by the neighborhood gatherings to visit with residents and give kids an up-close look at their vehicles.

Some neighborhoods that registered their parties early also will receive balloons and a visit by McGruff the crime dog. Ten parties also are receiving hot dogs from Bongaard's Family Meats.

For more information about the Cottage Grove parties, go to the city website at

St. Paul Park

St. Paul Park's 12th annual National Night Out will take place from 6-8 p.m. at Heritage Park, 14th and Laurel streets.

Police, fire and public works personnel will be available to explain their jobs and show off their squad cars, fire trucks and maintenance equipment. The Newport-St. Paul Park Lions Club will provide free hot dogs, pop and snacks while the supply lasts. Other activities will include demonstrations and handouts.

In Newport, residents will gather at Newport Lutheran Church, 900 15th St., from 6:30-8 p.m.

Organizers say the event is designed to heighten drug and crime prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. There will be food, children's games and live entertainment. If you go, take a lawn chair. The event is sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, SuperMom's, the New-Park Lions and South Suburban Rental.
