Newport police reports for July 3: Domestic assault, suspicious woman, theft

Recent criminal activity reported in Newport:

Domestic assault

A St. Paul woman reported June 19 that she was punched in the stomach by a male suspect while in the 1600 block of Summit Avenue. The male ran from the scene. No arrest was made.

Property damage

A Newport woman reported June 19 that several Newport community garden plots were damaged on Glen Road. Damage to several fences was estimated at $50.

A Newport man reported June 21 that his mailbox was damaged in the 1500 block of Bluestem Lane.

Suspicious woman

30 a.m. June 23 to the parking lot behind the Cloverleaf Bar, 2146 Hastings Ave, on a report of a suspicious person. Police found a Cottage Grove woman who said she was setting live traps in the parking lot to capture stray cats, which she wanted to get spayed. The woman said she had permission to be there, but agreed that what she was doing at that time of night could be considered suspicious. She was told by police that if she attempts to trap cats she should do it during the day.


SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported a $34 gas drive-off on June 23.


Police were called at 2 a.m. June 24 to the 1400 block of 10th Avenue for a reported assault. Police found a man on the front steps who was extremely intoxicated and couldn't explain what happened. A woman covered in blood was in a second-floor apartment hallway, but said she was OK and had been in a fight at a St. Paul Park bar. She was transported to Woodwinds Hospital for her injuries. The man, whose 0.292 blood-alcohol concentration was nearly four times the legal limit, was transported to a Hastings detox facility. No arrests were made and police reported that they could not even conclude where an assault had occurred.
