Newport police reports for May 14: Assault, fight, vicious dog, domestic


A Newport woman was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault after she allegedly punched her sister April 24 at a home in the 1600 block of 10th Avenue. The victim had a minor cut above her eye, according to the report.

Property damage

A Newport man reported April 28 that the cover to his boat had been sliced open while the boat was trailered at his home in the 1900 block of 10th Avenue.

Vicious dog

A Newport man was cited for having a vicious dog after a man reported that his dog was attacked by the suspect's off-leash dog at Loveland Park on April 27. The suspect's dog was aggressive toward a police officer who went to discuss the incident at the suspect's home, according to the report.


SuperAmerica, 1624 Hastings Ave., reported a $10 gas drive-off on April 30.


Police were called shortly before 10 p.m. April 30 on a report of a fight involving at least five people in the street in the 1100 block of Fifth Avenue. People were fighting with sticks, the caller reported. The group left in two cars. Police identified suspects.

Xcel Energy reported May 1 that someone had stolen 30 feet of copper ground wire from the power station in the 2900 block of Maxwell Avenue. The station is fenced in. The cost to repair and replace the stolen wire was estimated at $3,000.


Police on May 2 helped to transport a 13-year-old Newport boy to United Hospital in St. Paul for a psychological evaluation after he was fighting with family members and out of control. He had to be handcuffed and he struggled with police.

Attempted burglary

A Newport man reported May 2 that someone tried to kick in the door to his apartment in the 1600 block of 10th Avenue. Damage to the door was estimated at $100.
