Driver flees after high-speed chase in Cottage Grove

Cottage Grove police are investigating after a driver led officers on an early morning, high-speed chase, crashing into a fence and a motor home while speeding through residential neighborhoods before abandoning the vehicle.

An officer on patrol at 1 a.m. Wednesday observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed blow through a stop sign at 70th Street and Hinton Avenue, according to the police report. The vehicle was traveling at between 77 mph and 80 mph on 70th Street, where the limit is 50 mph, as the officer started pursuing the driver.

The police report said the driver continued south, driving for a time on Insdale Avenue and Indian Boulevard before approaching 80th Street on Ideal Avenue. The driver crashed over a concrete median at the 80th Street frontage road before continuing to travel south on Ideal Avenue.

The officer lost sight of the suspect south of 80th Street. The vehicle was found a short time later abandoned on Hyde Court South. It had significant damage, the report said.

The vehicle was unoccupied, but police said Friday they were waiting to speak with the alleged driver.
